MPL seeks contractors to finance, develop Thilafushi bulk cargo port
The human, financial and infrastructural resources required to undertake such a project is an eligible criterion for those interested in developing this port.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) on Wednesday announced the construction of a bulk port at Thilafushi for the transportation of loads such as gravel and fine aggregate.
MPL invited interested parties to submit expression of interest by 11.59 pm on April 26 for land reclamation for the port as well as establishing all the facilities necessary for the port.
MPL's announcement stated that the purpose of the port is to serve vessels loaded with large bulky cargo. Once the port is completed, it will also cater to some of the vessels diverted from the Male Commercial Port in order to address the congestion issues at the port in the capital city, the company said.

Thilafushi port will also serve some vessels going to Male Commercial Port until the construction of a port in Gulhifalhu island is complete

Thilafushi port will continue to be used as a bulk port even after the port at Gulhifalhu is completed; since there is no bulk port in the country yet, it will be easier for those importing bulky cargo

Eligibility criteria for those interested in the work are as follows:

Experience in developing deep sea commercial ports

The human, financial and infrastructure resources required to undertake such a project

The ability to finance such a project as it is being executed on a contractor financing basis
