Tourism ministry has estimated that China will be among the top three source markets for Maldives tourism this year.

China was the single biggest source market of tourists before Covid. Chinese tourist arrivals to the Maldives resumed in January, after a three-year hiatus.

According to statistics released by the tourism ministry on Friday, 1.05 million tourists have arrived in the Maldives by Wednesday.

Top 5 source markets:

  • Russia - 123,731 tourists

  • India - 121,046 tourists

  • UK - 88,204 tourists

  • China - 87,662 tourists

  • Germany - 71,642 tourists

According to the ministry, given the current number of tourist arrivals from China, it is expected to be among the top three countries with the highest number of tourist arrivals from early next month.

Two airlines currently operate scheduled flights between China and Maldives. A third airline is set to begin scheduled flights between China and Maldives on August 29.
