Bank of Maldives (BML) CEO Karl Stumke has resigned from his post.
BML said in a statement on Monday that Karl, who was appointed in October 2022, resigned on Sunday.
He resigned amid a police investigation into an alleged financial coup attempt by the opposition following tensions between the government and the bank over a recent ban on foreign transactions from cards issued to BML's Rufiyaa accounts.
Police have questioned BML and obtained documents in connection with the investigation.
BML said despite Karl's resignation, he will remain until the bank's extraordinary general meeting on September 21.
Deputy CEO Aishath Noordeen will manage the bank until the appointment of a new CEO, it added.
Aishath Noordeen had in August resigned from the BML board after the government announced that she had been removed from the board. However, she still works as the Deputy CEO of the bank.
