In connection with a tragic accident that took place in Hulhumalé on July 31, three individuals have been formally charged, with the trial scheduled to begin at the Criminal Court.

The accident involved a speeding car that collided with a cyclist, resulting in a fatality. However, the hearing that was slated for 9am has been unexpectedly cancelled, with the reason for the cancellation still undisclosed.

The most serious charges have been levelled against the driver of the car, Ibrahim Ikram, M. Land of Garden, Malé. His charges include:

  • Assault

  • Causing serious bodily injury due to reckless behavior

  • Two counts of damage to property

  • Failure to report the accident

  • Failure to provide assistance to an individual in need without reasonable cause

The other two passengers in the car have also been identified and charged. Ikramuh Rahman, H. Nooranmaageaage, Malé, faces similar charges, which include:

  • Failure to report the accident

  • Failure to provide assistance to a person in need without reasonable cause

  • Participation in causing injury

  • Causing serious bodily harm due to reckless actions

  • Two counts of participation in property damage

The third individual, Jinnah Ismail, Aazaadhuge, GA. Kanduhulhudhoo, faces charges of:

  • Participation in causing injury

  • Causing serious bodily injury due to reckless behavior

  • Two counts of participation in property damage

All three individuals involved in the incident have had previous run-ins with the law.

Ibrahim Ikram, the driver, was arrested in 2022 for his alleged involvement in a protest at a yoga event in Malé. He was released in February this year after being held in custody.

Ikramuh Rahman was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2015 when he was only 16 years old. The High Court upheld his sentence, but he was later pardoned through a rehabilitation program initiated by the juvenile court.

Jinnah Ismail, the third accused, has a more serious criminal background. He was serving a 25-year sentence for a drug-related offense.

However, in 2022, then President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih commuted his sentence, leading to his release under the presidential pardon.

Adding to the controversy surrounding the accident, it was revealed that the car involved in the fatal collision was not registered to operate within city limits, raising concerns about how the vehicle was being used and the lack of regulation enforcement.
