The Criminal Court has ruled that the attempted murder charges related to the stabbing of former Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem have not been proven.

Shameem was attacked on the morning of 31 January 2024 near the Noor Mosque in Malé. Seven individuals were arrested and charged with attempted murder involving the use of a sharp weapon. All seven remain in custody pending the outcome of the judicial process.

The accused are:

  • Midhath Adam, 24

  • Mohamed Jazlan, 22

  • Ahmed Maisan Hashim, 20

  • Shamal Hussain, 21

  • Zayan Nasir, 23

  • Rajwan Latheef, 22

  • Aban Abdul Hannan, 23

Criminal Court Judge Ibrahim Ihsan delivered the ruling last week. The court found that the primary evidence submitted by the prosecution—CCTV footage—was insufficient to establish guilt.

According to the court:

  • The CCTV footage did not align with the reported time of the incident.

  • The prosecution did not explain how this discrepancy was discovered during the investigation or prosecution stages.

  • While the evidence was admitted to the trial, it was determined that its probative value was insufficient to prove the charges.

The prosecution had alleged that:

  • Midhath Adam planned the attack with others and arrived at the scene while Shameem was near the Noor Mosque.

  • Mohamed Jazlan was involved in planning and transporting Midhathto the location of the attack.

  • Ahmed Maisan Hashim facilitated the attack near the mosque.

  • The remaining four accused waited in a nearby vehicle during the incident.
