Solih keeps 2028 election decision confidential; says shared with MDP
According to Solih, approximately five candidates have expressed interest in competing in the MDP presidential primary.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Sunday that he has shared his decision regarding contesting the upcoming presidential election with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leadership, but he refrained from disclosing the decision publicly, citing concerns about potential internal divisions within the party.
Solih made these remarks during an interview with Raaje TV, marking the one-year anniversary of President Mohamed Muizzu's government.
In response to questions posed by presenter Amir Salim about his intentions for the 2028 presidential election and the possibility of participating in the MDP primary, Solih repeatedly emphasised that the party leadership is aware of his plans but declined to elaborate further.
“I have spoken to the party leaders about my political career and future. They will know how I will continue it now, to the extent that there is no doubt,” Solih stated, without specifying his decision.
According to Solih, approximately five candidates have expressed interest in competing in the MDP presidential primary. He urged them to focus on contributing to the party while pursuing competitive internal politics.
“It is very good for me to do competitive internal work. But what I ask of all of them is to get involved in running the party. There will be personal interests, but at the same time, go ahead with the party,” he said.
Addressing the challenges facing the country, Solih underscored the need for significant efforts before the 2028 election.
When asked if he intended to step aside and provide an opportunity for others, Solih did not give a direct response but remarked, “I would have told everyone to go ahead.”
Pressed further on whether he intended to make a decision about contesting the election, Solih stated, “My decision would be known to a lot of people in the party’s leadership.”
He added that revealing his decision now could cause more harm than good to the party.
“If I reveal the decision I have taken today, the party will suffer more than the benefits,” he said, while assuring that he would announce his decision at a later date.
Solih concluded by affirming his commitment to the party, stating, “I will not be an obstacle to the party. I will not be an obstacle to the party winning the government.
