The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) on Friday denied allegations that Hashim Abubakr, who is serving a sentence for sexually assaulting a child in a position of trust, was released from prison before completing his sentence.
MCS clarified that he has been transferred to house arrest due to a medical condition.
Hashim was sentenced to 12 years, five months, and 18 days in prison on November 2022. His sentence is set to expire on May 8, 2035.
In a statement, MCS explained that Hashim had been suffering from a hip problem. Doctors advised that surgery required to address his condition could not be performed in the Maldives. Based on medical recommendations, the Corrections Medical Board granted him permission to travel abroad for treatment on August 5.
Hashim returned to the Maldives on September 16 following his treatment.
"Hashim Abubakr has been placed under temporary house arrest to serve his sentence as he cannot be treated in jail due to his illness, as per the recommendation of his doctor," MCS stated.
The corrections authority added that while he is under house arrest, he is being monitored in accordance with established rules and regulations.
