President says to propose bills to laws on drugs, gang crimes
To address gaps, the government will introduce amendments to the Drugs Act in parliament this week.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday announced plans to propose amendments to strengthen laws addressing drug-related issues and gang crimes.
In a statement on X, the president emphasised that current shortcomings in the Drugs Act present significant challenges for state agencies in combating the drug epidemic. To address these gaps, the government will introduce amendments to the Drugs Act in parliament this week.
“The government will present the necessary amendments to the narcotics law in parliament this week after consultation with relevant state agencies to eliminate challenges in investigating and prosecuting drug cases,” the president stated.
Highlighting the connection between drug-related issues and gang crimes, the president revealed plans to replace the existing Gang Crimes Prohibition Act with a new legal framework.
“The government will table the newly formulated Gang Crimes Prohibition Bill in parliament in the next two weeks,” he said.
The proposed changes aim to improve the capacity of law enforcement and the judiciary to address these interconnected issues effectively.
