People will avenge injustice if wronged, Fayyaz says
The press conference also touched on the Elections Commission's (EC) recent decision to take action against the MDP.
Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman, Fayyaz Ismail, has stated that the Maldivian people will respond to injustice if they are wronged.
He made this assertion during a press conference held by the party on Saturday, addressing remarks made at a rally in HDh. Kulhudhuffushi.
At the rally, a speaker referred to President Mohamed Muizzu and suggested that recent government policies, particularly changes to tobacco regulations, could lead to consequences similar to those faced by former President Mohamed Ameen. Ameen was overthrown in 1953 following widespread discontent during his presidency.
When questioned by a journalist about the controversial statement, Fayyaz clarified that it was meant as an advisory rather than a threat.
"It is necessary to remind people of the history of Maldives on a podium," Fayyaz said.
He emphasised that the comment was made to urge the government not to repeat mistakes of the past.
Fayyaz also pointed out that Maldivian political history lacks a tradition of "kind politics," stating: "So, I don't know if it's Mohamed Ameen or ‘Andhiri Andhireen.’ Don’t be cruel to the people. If you are cruel, the people of Maldives will play with the history books."
The press conference also touched on the Elections Commission's (EC) recent decision to take action against the MDP. According to Fayyaz, the EC had sent a letter urging the party to "act within the legal framework," but he claimed to be unaware of the specific details of the letter.
Despite the ongoing scrutiny, Fayyaz defended the party's actions, reiterating that the MDP’s rhetoric is rooted in historical awareness and a commitment to protecting the people's rights.
