Japan donates equipment to boost Maldives' maritime safety
The donation, aimed at enhancing maritime search and rescue operations, underscores the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
Japan on Monday donated essential equipment to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coastguard.
The equipment was formally handed over during a ceremony held on Monday. Japanese ambassador to the Maldives, Takechi Midori, presented the items on behalf of the government of Japan, while defence minister Mohamed Gassan Maumoon accepted the donation on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.
The donated equipment is expected to play a critical role in improving the coastguard’s capacity to respond to maritime emergencies, ensuring the safety of lives and property at sea. This aligns with the shared objective of both nations to enhance regional maritime security and foster safer waterways.
Takechi, speaking at the event, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in strengthening its maritime capabilities. She emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing challenges to regional safety and security, adding that Japan remains a steadfast partner in these efforts.
Gassan expressed gratitude for Japan's continued support, highlighting the impact of the donation on the Coast Guard’s operational readiness. He noted that the new equipment would significantly enhance the MNDF’s ability to conduct search and rescue missions, ensuring the safety of vessels navigating Maldivian waters.
"The equipment provided by Japan will empower the MNDF coastguard to respond more effectively to maritime incidents and uphold the security of our sea areas," the minister said.
Japan and the Maldives have shared a robust relationship rooted in mutual respect and cooperation. Japan has consistently supported the Maldives in various sectors, including disaster management, environmental protection, and infrastructure development.
