Two extraordinary sittings of parliament will be held to appoint members to fill vacant positions in independent institutions.

Majority leader, Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falaah said on Thursday that the sittings are scheduled for the 16th and 20th of this month.

Nominations for the vacant posts in the Elections Commission (EC) and the Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) were submitted at the conclusion of the last session of parliament.

The two vacant seats in the EC arose after the resignation of Vice President Ali Nashath and member Mohamed Asif in November, following serious criminal allegations against them. The two nominations for the vacant positions are:

  • Mohamed Zahid

  • Abdul Rahman Solah Rashid

The two vacant positions in the Broadcasting Commission became available after the terms of chairperson Mariyam Waheeda and member Ali Yousuf expired on the 5th of last month. The president has put forward the following nominations for these positions:

  • Former Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Abdulla

  • Former President Abdulla Yameen’s spokesman Ibrahim Muaz Ali

According to the Elections Commission Act, if a vacancy occurs in the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, or a member's position, an appointment must be made within 60 days.

According to the rules of procedure of the parliament, the sessions are divided into:

  • First term - 1 February to 15 May

  • Second term - 1 June to 15 August

  • Third term - 1 October to 30 November
