NDMA estimates over MVR 3 million in damages from weekend storm
MET recorded 271.7 mm of rainfall in Male last Friday and Saturday, marking it as a record-breaking weather event.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Thursday estimated that damages caused by last weekend’s heavy rains in Male and atolls exceed MVR 3 million.
The rainfall, which led to widespread flooding, prompted the largest flood relief operation conducted by the NDMA in recent years.
In its updated report, the NDMA highlighted the extensive scope of the operation:

Over 740 requests for assistance were made, including from homes, businesses, schools, and warehouses.

Temporary shelter and food were provided to 226 individuals for two days at a cost of MVR 200,000.

The operation itself incurred an additional cost of MVR 61,500.

The NDMA supplied 20,000 sandbags to the Male City Council for flood mitigation.
Flooding affected 145 households, of which:

115 homes have been assessed.

13 households declined assessments.

17 locations could not be assessed due to access issues.
Flooding was reported in several islands, including F. Nilandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, Dh. Meedhoo, F. Magoodhoo, ADh. Maamigili, K. Guraidhoo, F. Feeali, and K. Hinmafushi. Specific reports included:

43 cases in Dh. Meedhoo.

22 cases in F. Nilandhoo.

5 cases in F. Magoodhoo.

3 cases in ADh. Maamigili.
Flooding was also recorded in R. Inguraidhoo and Sh. Narudhoo due to the rainfall.
The NDMA reported that damages to homes in Male were estimated at MVR 2.2 million, while damages in atoll households totalled MVR 800,000. Financial assistance will be provided to affected households following the completion of assessments and in accordance with NDMA regulations.
