National Disaster Management Authority on Monday issued safety guidance to reduce risks linked to lightning and thunderstorms.

The advisory comes as Maldives Meteorological Service warned that current weather conditions may worsen in the coming days, with rainfall affecting several parts of the country.

NDMA urged the public to take precautions and remain alert to reduce potential harm.

The authority advised people to avoid open spaces and elevated areas such as rooftops and terraces during thunderstorms.

It also advised remaining indoors where possible and avoiding shelter under trees or near tall structures if caught outside.

NDMA said electrical devices should be disconnected from power sources and not used during storms.

The public was also advised to stay away from flooded areas, wet surfaces and metal objects.

Recent rainfall in Malé was accompanied by thunder, and a lightning strike caused damage to a building.
