National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has dispatched 72 pumps to islands most affected by flooding caused by ongoing heavy rains.
Speaking at a joint press conference with the Maldives Police Service, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and NDMA on Monday, Chief Executive Hisaan Hassan stated that the authority has taken measures to mitigate the impact of the flooding.
"The NDMA has provided facilities to prepare for a flood situation. We have already sent drainage pumps and related equipment to 72 islands that are prone to flooding," Hisaan said.
He further noted that fixed base irrigation systems will be installed on these islands to enhance flood preparedness. Response teams stationed in the provinces are active and ready to assist as needed.
Hisaan added that police on the islands are assisting response teams, and additional support from MNDF is available when required.
The heavy rains, which have persisted since the beginning of the year, are expected to continue for the next five days. Flooding has caused damage to homes and belongings on some islands, with NDMA teams working to address the situation.
