President Mohamed Muizzu said on Thursday that efforts are underway to allocate land and flats as pledged, with the list of flat recipients under the previous government's Gedhoruveriya scheme expected to be announced before Ramadan.

The president made these remarks while speaking to reporters after concluding his visit to islands in Huvadhoo Atoll.

Addressing questions about the progress of the Gedhoruveriya scheme, the president affirmed that the allocation process has begun as promised. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that no legitimate beneficiary loses their allocated land or flat.

“I promised that we will not take away any land or flat given to a citizen. However, if someone has obtained a flat or land through irregular, fraudulent, or forged means, it will be cancelled,” the president said.

He also emphasised the importance of adhering to proper processes and noted that investigations would be conducted in cases where irregularities are identified.

The president expressed confidence that the announcement of the 4,000 flats under the scheme would happen soon and noted that he was working to ensure the list is made public before Ramadan, which begins in March.

The flat list was initially expected to be announced in November last year but faced delays. The president attributed the delay to the need for revisions after identifying individuals who had been included in the list unlawfully. Investigations by the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are ongoing.

The responsibilities previously handled by the housing ministry have now been transferred to the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure, under Dr Abdulla Muththalib.
