3-month prison, MVR 70,000 fine for reckless race car driver

Ibrahim Ikram, the driver involved in a car accident on July 31 that injured a parked passenger, has been sentenced to three months in jail and fined.

Ikram pleaded guilty to six charges and signed a plea agreement with the prosecution.

The Criminal Court ruled on the charges during a hearing held under a fast-track trial process on Sunday.

Ikram’s sentencing includes the following penalties:

  • Assault charge: Jail term commuted to a fine of MVR 44,800, payable within eight months.

  • Reckless driving resulting in serious injury: Three months’ imprisonment and a fine of MVR 19,200, payable within eight months.

  • Damage to property (two charges): Ordered to pay MVR 24,000 for medical expenses and MVR 95,000 for motorcycle damages.

  • Failure to report an accident: Fined MVR 5,400, payable within eight months.

  • Failure to assist a person in need without reasonable cause: Fined MVR 600, payable within eight months.

The court’s decision aligns with the plea agreement reached with the prosecution. Both Ikram and the state confirmed that MVR 118,000 has already been paid to the victim.

The prosecution has also filed charges against two other individuals who were in the car at the time of the incident. The car was not registered for driving in the Malé zone. These individuals, identified as Ikramur Rahman and Jinah Ismail, have denied the charges.

Charges Against Ikramur Rahman:

  • Failure to report an accident.

  • Failure to assist a person in need without reasonable cause.

  • Participating in an injury.

  • Causing serious bodily injury through reckless actions.

  • Two counts of participating in property damage.

Charges Against Jinah Ismail:

  • Participating in an injury.

  • Causing serious bodily injury through reckless actions.

  • Two counts of participating in property damage.

Criminal Records of the Individuals:

  • Ibrahim Ikram: Arrested in 2022 for allegedly protesting at a yoga event.Released from custody in February 2024.

  • Ikramur Rahman: Sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2015.The High Court upheld the sentence, which was later commuted after participating in a rehabilitation program.

  • Jinah Ismail:

  • Previously sentenced to 25 years in a drug-related case.Released in 2022 after then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih commuted his sentence under the president’s pardon authority.

The court proceedings against Rahman and Ismail are ongoing.
