An 85-year-old Maldivian man who travelled to perform Umrah has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
Islamic minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed confirmed the news on Sunday, stating that the man is currently receiving treatment at Noor Hospital in Mecca.
The minister noted that the group accompanying the elderly man on Umrah was attentive, but the individual had no immediate family members present in Saudi Arabia. One of his sons is scheduled to travel to Mecca Monday to be with him, he added.
Over 6,000 Maldivians travelled to perform Umrah last month, marking a record number. Most of them have since returned to the Maldives.
