Housing and Construction Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib announced on Tuesday that land allocated under the Binveriya scheme will be confiscated if found to have been distributed unfairly.
The minister was responding to a question at a press conference held at the Presidential Palace regarding the review of the Gedhoruveriya flat list.
Muththalib acknowledged allegations that some land allocations under the Binveriya scheme were made improperly. Allegations include instances where land was given to individuals who already owned property or to those who were not born in Male.
The minister stated that these allegations would be investigated thoroughly.
"If such cases are found, we will address them. Even if the land has been registered, handed over, or fenced, action will be taken if it was allocated to an ineligible person," said Muththalib.
The Binveriya scheme was implemented to provide housing to the residents of Malé. The minister emphasised that land allocations must adhere to the rules of the scheme and that violations would not be tolerated.
"If land has been acquired through improper means or corruption, it will be confiscated. This includes allocations made under the second phase of the Hulhumalé land distribution," Muththalib stated.
The minister warned that no land would remain with individuals who were not on the official allocation list or who acquired land through scams or other improper channels, whether involving the ministry or the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
Muththalib also highlighted reports of scams involving the sale of land and flats related to housing projects. He urged the public to avoid participating in such activities, stating that the government does not support or facilitate scams.
"I advise the public not to engage in fraudulent activities, such as attempting to buy land for a few hundred thousand MVR. Such transactions will not succeed," he cautioned.
The minister reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring fairness and transparency in all housing-related projects, and any discrepancies will be addressed promptly.
