Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib on Tuesday announced that the servers damaged in the fire at the housing ministry building on December 12 will be sent to Singapore for data recovery.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, Muththalib stated that the fire occurred while work was underway to install backup server systems in the Umar Zahir Office Building located in Hulhumale.

The minister confirmed that efforts are being made to recover the data stored on the damaged disks, which will be sent to Singapore for further recovery attempts. However, he acknowledged that the fire had caused significant damage.

Dr Ali Haider, who was the housing minister at the time of the fire and now serves as the higher education minister, had previously stated that the incident destroyed most of the documents and data in the ministry. Haider had expressed concern over the potential loss of critical information, including employee records and details of ongoing projects.

“The servers are estimated to be unsalvageable. If that happens, it will result in a significant loss of information,” Haider had said following the incident.

Addressing these concerns, Muththalib clarified that housing-related data and lists remain unaffected by the damage.

“These portals are set up on Microsoft Azure. All the documents are stored there through a subscription service,” he explained, assuring that key records are securely backed up.

The ministry has stated that it will continue its recovery efforts and provide updates as the situation develops.
