PG declines to charge Fazul in document deletion case
Fazul resigned from his post during the period in which the issue was under review.
The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has decided not to pursue charges against former Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed over allegations that documents were deleted from the corporation’s servers.
The case was investigated after it was revealed that Fazul’s brother, former Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, had received a plot under the Binveriya housing scheme despite his name not appearing on the official list of land recipients. Fazul resigned from his post during the period in which the issue was under review.
According to the PGO, the case was not forwarded for prosecution due to a lack of evidence. The office stated that neither Fazul nor HDC’s Head of IT, Abdulla Shuhood, could be linked to any act of deleting documents that could have been relevant to a criminal investigation.
The decision referenced three findings:
-
Both individuals had been suspected of obstructing justice by allegedly deleting documents from HDC’s servers.
-
A report by the HDC IT Department stated that no documents or data had been deleted or lost from the corporation’s systems.
-
The police investigation report found no evidence that Fazul or Shuhood had removed any documents from the servers.
It remains unclear whether any other allegations involving Fazul are currently under investigation.
