Moomina Waheed, a current member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), has been nominated for the position of vice-president of the commission.

The position became vacant following the resignation of Ahmed Adhham Abdulla.

Moomina's nomination has been sent to the HRCM, and the parliament’s independent institutions committee is conducting interviews for the role.

Moomina was appointed to the HRCM on September 8, 2020. She holds a Master’s degree in Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific), completed in Australia.

Moomina first joined the HRCM in 2004 and served for nine years before taking roles at Tree Top and the Ministry of Economic Development.

The current members of the HRCM include:

  • President Mariyam Muna

  • Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq

  • Samau Ahmed Najeeb

  • Ismail Habeeb Abdul Rahman

As per the HRCM Act, the president is authorised to appoint the president and vice-chairperson of the commission, subject to parliamentary approval.
