Independent institutions committee of the parliament has initiated an investigation into allegations of sexual assault made against Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) member Mohamed Fazeen.

The complaint involves a female employee of the commission.

The matter was referred to the committee, which convened a closed-door meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue. The meeting was held confidentially to protect the confidentiality of the individuals involved.

When approached for comment, Fazeen confirmed that the committee was examining the case but refrained from providing further details.

"My case is being investigated. It has been submitted to the committee. I don’t want to discuss it further. If there is a need to disclose more information as the case progresses, I will do so," he stated.

Reliable sources indicate that the allegations pertain to the sexual assault of a female employee within the commission.

Fazeen has been serving as a member of the Broadcom since his appointment on March 7, 2021, and was elevated to the position of Vice President on January 19, 2023.

Separately, Mohamed Abdulla and Aiminath Saraahath Izzath were appointed to fill two vacant posts in the commission on Monday.

Further developments regarding the investigation are expected as the committee continues its review of the case.
