Govt orders cancellation of Thinadhoo housing announcement
The ministry sent a letter to the Thinadhoo council on Thursday instructing the cancellation of the process.
Ministry of Housing and Construction on Thursday ordered the cancellation of an announcement issued by the GDh. Thinadhoo City Council on Wednesday, which invited contractors to build 200 housing units on the island.
Three days ago, the council opened an online portal for residents and those interested in migrating to the island, allowing applications until April. However, the announcement remains on the gazette.
The ministry sent a letter to the Thinadhoo council on Thursday instructing the cancellation of the process.
Prior to the announcement, the council had issued a notice in August stating that applications for these units would open on September 1, 2024.
In the letter signed by Deputy Minister Hassan Vishal and addressed to Thinadhoo Mayor Saud, the ministry stated that it has the mandate to construct, allocate, and oversee government-built housing units. The letter outlined that:
-
Housing units are allocated according to rules set by the ministry.
-
The 200 housing units under construction in Thinadhoo fall under the ministry’s jurisdiction, and the application process must be conducted with its guidance.
The ministry stated that the Thinadhoo council had opened the application process without its approval. As a result, the council was directed to cancel the announcement and submit the application process for endorsement before proceeding with the allocation.
When contacted by Atoll Times, Saud stated that the council had not received such a letter before the end of official hours on Thursday. He said confirmation of receipt would be possible when the office reopens the following day.
