President Mohamed Muizzu announced Thursday that 4,000 housing units will be constructed in K. Gulhifalhu with the support of concessional funding from India.

During his presidential address at the opening of parliament, the president outlined plans for the housing sector in the coming year.

He explained that the project in Gulhifalhu is significant to many residents of Male, linking their hopes to the development. The land registry will be handed over to those who have received plots from the dredged land in Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru, and Hulhumale lagoons upon completion of the dredging process.

The president also stated that work is progressing to begin the construction of 4,000 social housing units in Gulhifalhu with Indian financial assistance.

“We aim to complete the dredging of the land at Rasmale this year and initiate road construction and housing projects next year,” he said.

Furthermore, 150 hectares of land will be dredged from Uthuru Thilafalhu this year to increase available space for housing.

The president also confirmed that new social housing projects will be launched in Male, Villimale, and Hulhumale this year.

Two Indian companies are overseeing the construction of 4,000 housing units as part of Phase II of Hulhumale, with the completion expected by September, at which point the flats will be handed over to recipients.
