MP files complaint against Ghassan over 'inappropriate' Addu remarks
The independent MP stated that the minister made the comments during a conversation after the presidential statement on Thursday.
Addu Meedhoo MP Abdul Rahman on Thursday submitted a letter to President Mohamed Muizzu, alleging that Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon made inappropriate remarks about the people of Addu following the president’s address to parliament.
Releasing the letter publicly, the independent MP stated that the minister made the comments during a conversation after the presidential statement on Thursday.
In the letter, Abdul Rahman highlighted that ministers are sworn to protect the rights of citizens and uphold their responsibilities in accordance with the constitution, including maintaining relations with other state institutions.
The MP stated that, as the elected representative for Addu Meedhoo, he met with the minister and later brought the matter to the president’s attention after what he described as inappropriate remarks about the people of Meedhoo, Addu, and Maldives in general.
According to the letter, the MP had approached the minister to ask why he had not responded to phone calls regarding two issues of public concern.
"When I asked this, the minister became angry and said, 'I don’t have to answer the phone… Addu is not even about me,'" the letter stated.
The MP stated that a defence minister is expected to serve all citizens and requested the president to review the matter and issue an apology to the people of Addu and Maldives.
