Parliament on Wednesday accepted the government's Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Dangerous Offences Bill, which proposes life imprisonment for serious gang-related crimes and a fine of up to MVR 10 million.
The bill has been referred to the judiciary committee for further review.
PNC MP Musthafa Hussein presented the bill on behalf of the government. It was introduced during the second session of parliament, with the preliminary debate held after the commencement of the new session this week.
The bill was accepted with the support of 42 members present and voting in Wednesday's sitting.
If enacted, the bill will repeal the Prohibition of Gang Crimes Act and the Prohibition of Intimidation, Possession of Dangerous Weapons and Sharp Weapons Act, introducing stricter legal provisions.
Article 3 of the bill classifies organised serious crimes into six categories:
-
Drug trafficking offences
-
Trafficking in persons
-
Trafficking in prohibited goods
-
Counterfeiting money or similar notes
-
Dangerous offences, including murder, assault, serious physical injury, kidnapping, and intimidation
-
Violent crimes carrying a penalty of more than 10 years' imprisonment
The judiciary committee will now review the bill before it is tabled for final approval.
