Feydhoo South MP Ibrahim Didi on Wednesday called for granting extensive powers to the president to govern the Maldives.
He made the remarks during a parliamentary debate on the Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Dangerous Offences Bill.
Speaking on the bill, Ibrahim Didi, a member of the ruling PNC, stated that such laws should empower the police, government ministers, and the president. He noted that parliament holds the authority to remove officials from office if they misuse their powers.
“The amendments aim to prevent the abuse of power. Even if authority is given to the police, it is not acceptable for them to misuse it. If that happens, they should be held accountable before parliament,” he said.
He stated that granting extensive powers to the president would not create issues, adding that strong executive authority was necessary for effective governance.
Citing China as an example, he said countries where presidents hold significant powers tend to have lower crime rates and greater stability.
“There are democratic countries around the world, but governance should be based on the people’s needs. They seek development, peace, and security,” he said.
He further stated that while some may refer to such systems as dictatorships, these countries often experience greater stability and economic progress.
