20 life imprisonments, MVR 10m fines in 2024 for drug offences
According to a statement issued by the court, a total of 137 drug-related cases were concluded last year.

Criminal Court has sentenced 20 individuals to life imprisonment for drug trafficking in 2024, ordering them to pay a total of MVR 10.2 million in fines.
According to a statement issued by the court Wednesday, a total of 137 drug-related cases were concluded last year.
Among the convictions:

20 individuals were sentenced to life imprisonment, which is 25 years, for drug trafficking.

Seven individuals were sentenced to 12 years in jail for other drug offences.

The court imposed fines amounting to more than MVR 10.2 million.
The court also stated that seven drug cases resulted in acquittals.
Of the cases concluded, 95% ended in conviction, which includes cases where defendants pleaded guilty or were referred to the Drug Court for rehabilitation.
