Zahid appointed as EC chair, Nashid as ACC vice chair
A recent amendment to the governing Act of both commissions has granted the president the authority to appoint individuals to these posts.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday appointed Mohamed Zahid as the president of the Elections Commission (EC) and Abdulla Nashid as the vice president of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The position of EC president became vacant following the completion of the five-year term of former President Fuad Thaufeeq, who now serves as the Maldives ambassador to Thailand.
Meanwhile, the role of ACC vice president was left open after the resignation of the former vice president Abdul Salam, following the decision of the Independent Institutions Committee of Parliament to remove him.
Zahid and Nashid were formally appointed to their respective positions and received their letters of appointment from the President in a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Tuesday.
Additionally, Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed was appointed as the vice president of the EC after parliamentary approval.
In the past, the president and vice presidents of the EC and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) were elected by a vote among commission members.
However, a recent amendment to the governing Act of both commissions has granted the president the authority to appoint individuals to these posts, subject to parliamentary approval.
This marks the first time such a legal amendment has been enacted.
