The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has launched investigations into disciplinary cases against Supreme Court judges Azmiralda Zahir, Mahaz Ali Zahir and Husnu Suood.

The three were suspended on Wednesday in connection with another criminal investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Notices have been issued to the judges handling the case against Azmiralda, Mahaz and Suood. Copies of these notices have been received by Atoll Times.

According to the notice, the JSC is investigating the following matters:

  • Azmiralda and Mahaz are being investigated for allegedly influencing the arrest warrant of Azmiralda's husband, IGMH doctor Ismail Latheef.

  • Suood is under investigation regarding the case of former High Court Assistant Registrar Hussain Mohamed Haneef, who was brought before the Supreme Court on October 25, 2022, for allegedly making derogatory remarks.

The JSC’s decision to suspend the three Supreme Court judges comes as a hearing was scheduled regarding the motion to quash a constitutional amendment proposed by the ruling PNC majority.

The petition, filed by former MP Ali Hussain, sought to overturn the constitutional amendment that would result in parliamentarians losing their seat if expelled from their party. The hearing was set for 11 am Wednesday, but with the suspension of the three judges just before the hearing, the case has now stalled.

Currently, four Supreme Court judges remain active, while three are suspended. As per the Courts Act, a constitutional case must be heard by a bench of at least five judges.
