Maniu hastily appointed High Court judge

A member of the public also filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) alleging that it was an illegal benefit to a particular person.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed Abdul Maniu Hussain, who resigned as a member four days ago, as a High Court judge.

The post of High Court judge became vacant after former High Court judge Ahmed Shakeel retired on Thursday after serving 20 years. Shakeel was granted retirement on the 1st of this month.

Maniu, who served as a lawyer in the JSC until last Tuesday, was sworn in as a High Court judge on Thursday.

Maniu's appointment to the post of High Court judge comes amid accusations by some that the JSC is trying to do so in a "hasty" manner. A member of the public also filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) alleging that it was an illegal benefit to a particular person.

Timeline for appointment of the judge to the High Court:

  • 1st of this month : JSC approves Shakeel's retirement

  • 5th of this month: Open for nominations for High Court judges

  • 12th of this month: Deadline for applications

  • 12th of this month: Maniu resigns as JSC member

  • 12th of this month: Following the announcement of Maniu's resignation, the Commission announces that six candidates, including him, have nominated themselves for the post of High Court judge

  • On Wednesday: Shakeel retires from service

  • On Wednesday: Commission decides to appoint Maniu High Court judge

  • On Thursday: Maniu appointed and sworn in

The work was completed within two weeks and Maniu was appointed to the post on Thursday, and with the swearing-in of President-elect Mohamed Muizzu on Friday, some changes will be made to the members of the commission. They include:

  • The Attorney General of this government, Ibrahim Riffath, will no longer be there

  • Presidential envoy Masthoor Husnu will also be gone
