Former President Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday criticised the felling of a large number of trees in Villimale and called for criminal charges against Male City Council.

A video circulating on social media on Wednesday showed trees being cut down on both sides of a road in Villimale, prompting criticism from members of the public.

In a post on X, Nasheed stated that it is unlawful to remove trees without authorisation.

"It is illegal for Male City Council to cut down trees growing on the streets of the city at will. I think the council should be prosecuted," Nasheed said in his post.

The council has not yet issued a statement regarding the reason for the tree removal.

Nasheed also raised concerns about the removal of old trees on Ameenee Magu when the previous government carried out road development work. He had filed a case in the Civil Court against the Ministry of Planning and the Road Development Corporation (RDC) in an attempt to stop the removal, but the court did not grant an order.
