The Local Government Ministry on Saturday launched a cleaning campaign to clear garbage from the sewers of Male's streets.

The campaign began at 9:30 am in front of Luxury Store in Maafannu ward, with Local Government Minister Adam Shareef visiting the area to inspect the work.

According to the ministry, city roads frequently flood when it rains. The Maldives National Defence Force, police, and ministry officials have been involved in efforts to drain water from the streets on multiple occasions.

The Male City Council has been cleaning the drainage canals since the beginning of the year. Additionally, two new pumps have been introduced to improve drainage capacity. The city council stated that:

  • Each pump discharges 11,356 litres of water per minute.

  • Previously, pumps with capacities of 900 and 1,300 litres per minute were used.
