Askoi Group is currently under investigation for failing to take a group of pilgrims to Umrah despite having received payment for the journey.

The Islamic Ministry on Thursday assured that strict action will be taken if the group is found to have violated the rules governing Umrah travel services.

The issue came to light after a family of six, who had paid a total of MVR 252,000 (MVR 42,000 per person) since August last year, publicly shared their experience.

According to the family, they were initially informed that their departure was scheduled for this Ramadan. However, at the last minute, Askoi Group cited "technical problems" as the reason for the cancellation and promised to refund the money after the 15th of the following month.

After the family's concerns gained traction on social media, the Islamic Ministry confirmed that it was looking into the matter. In a statement, Minister Mohamed Shaheem emphasised that the case had been brought to the attention of the relevant authorities and that necessary actions would be taken.

"The issue of the Askoi Group has come to the attention of the ministry. The relevant unit is investigating the matter," Shaheem stated.

The minister also reaffirmed that strict measures would be enforced against any organisation found to be violating regulations regarding Umrah travel. He highlighted that in recent cases, permits of similar groups had been revoked, and disciplinary action had been taken against them.
