The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Friday criticised the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Elections Commission (EC), alleging that the commissions are prioritising the rights of the President and his family over others.

The MDP has been holding anti-government protests in Male every night. The HRCM and EC have issued statements addressing some of the concerns raised during these demonstrations.

The EC recently condemned remarks made by MDP activist Mariyam Zubair during Wednesday night's protest, stating that the comments were directed at President Mohamed Muizzu's son. The HRCM and EC have been accused by the MDP of issuing statements that serve political interests.

In a press release, the MDP stated that the allegations did not target a child. The party described it as irresponsible for the HRCM and EC to conclude that Mariyam Zubair’s remarks were directed at a child and to issue statements accordingly.

The MDP further claimed that independent commissions are acting under political influence and called on them to stop enabling what they described as an attempt to consolidate power within a single family. The party also accused President Muizzu of restricting political activities and claimed the EC is facilitating an environment that supports only one political ideology.

The statement also criticised the HRCM for not addressing alleged constitutional violations by the President, while acting quickly against those engaging in protests. The MDP accused members of independent commissions of prioritising their own positions over public rights.

The party reiterated its stance that these issues need to be addressed under the law.
