High Court Judge Mohamed Faisal has been temporarily assigned the administration of the court following the appointment of Justice Hussain Shaheed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
The High Court announced that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) directed Faisal to oversee court operations on an interim basis. Faisal, who was appointed as a High Court judge on 24 July 2018, has also served as a member and Vice-President of the JSC.
Shaheed was appointed to the Supreme Court after Husnu Suood resigned as a Supreme Court judge on 4 March. Suood also resigned from the Supreme Court, alleging that President Mohamed Muizzu attempted to influence the court.
Judges Suood, Mahaz Ali Zahir, and Azmiralda Zahir have submitted a complaint to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Their suspension took place shortly before a scheduled hearing on an interim injunction related to a parliamentary amendment allowing party members to lose their seats in the House of Representatives.
