The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Thursday opened nominations for the positions of chief justice and judge of the High Court.

The vacancy for a High Court Judge arose following the appointment of former Chief Justice of the High Court, Hussain Shaheed, as a Supreme Court judge on Wednesday.

The JSC has invited applications for the position of judge, while current High Court judges are also eligible to apply for the role of chief justice.

According to two separate announcements by the JSC:

  • Nominations for chief justice are open until 12 noon on 31 March.

  • Applications for the High Court judge position are open until 10 am on 1 April.

The salary structure for both positions is as follows:

Chief justice of the High Court:

  • Basic salary: MVR 47,700 per month

  • Living allowance: MVR 18,000 per month

  • Risk allowance: MVR 3,300 per month

High Court judge:

  • Basic salary: MVR 45,700 per month

  • Living allowance: MVR 18,000 per month

  • Risk allowance: MVR 3,300 per month

Applicants for the position of High Court judge must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 25 years of age

  • Hold a first degree in Islamic Sharia or law

  • Have at least five years of experience as a judge, lawyer, or both

Justice Mohamed Faisal has been temporarily assigned to oversee the administration of the High Court until a new chief justice is appointed.

Shaheed was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge following the resignation of former Supreme Court Justice Husnu Suood. Suood resigned after accusing President Mohamed Muizzu of attempting to influence the Supreme Court.

Suood, Mahaz Ali Zahir, and Azmiralda Zahir have filed a complaint with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The judges were suspended shortly before a hearing on an interim injunction related to a parliamentary amendment to the constitution, which allows party members to lose their seats in the House of Representatives.
