Police seize over MVR 400,000 from ex-Immigration chief's flat
Police conducted a search of Shamman’s apartment early Friday morning as part of the investigation.
Police have seized a significant amount of cash from the apartment of Mohamed Shamman Waheed, who was dismissed as Immigration Controller on Friday. The total amount in local and foreign currency exceeds MVR 400,000.
Shamman is under investigation in connection with allegations that immigration officers used their positions to extort money from foreigners. While police have not officially filed charges against him, sources have indicated that he is also accused of financial misconduct.
Police conducted a search of Shamman’s apartment early Friday morning as part of the investigation. According to a source, who requested anonymity, the cash recovered includes:
-
Over MVR 200,000
-
USD 10,000 (approximately MVR 154,200)
-
11,000 Malaysian ringgit
-
Other foreign currencies
The total cash recovered is estimated to be between MVR 400,000 and MVR 500,000.
Police suspect the money is linked to operations conducted by the Immigration Department targeting undocumented foreigners. Three individuals arrested in a separate police operation on Friday are also believed to be connected to the case.
Attempts to contact Shamman for comment were unsuccessful as his phone remained switched off.
