Another immigration officer sentenced in expatriate worker case
Two of the arrested officers have already pleaded guilty and were sentenced by the Criminal Court.
Criminal Court last week sentenced immigration officer Ibrahim Ahmed to 11 months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to charges related to the exploitation of expatriate workers.
The case is linked to the arrest of the first immigration controller appointed under the current administration, Shamman Waheed, who was dismissed and taken into custody in March 2025. Four other immigration officers were arrested at the same time, including Ibrahim Ahmed of G. Happyside.
Two of the arrested officers have already pleaded guilty and were sentenced by the Criminal Court. Mohamed Alsan Ismail of Moonimage, Th. Buruni, received sentences of two months and four months’ imprisonment on separate charges. Ahmed Lassan of M. Hazaareevila was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment.
Ibrahim Ahmed faced three charges and entered guilty pleas to all counts. On a charge of abuse of official status, he was sentenced to one year and 12 days’ imprisonment, with two months to be served in jail and the remainder converted to a fine of MVR 62,400.
On a second charge, he was sentenced to two years, four months and 24 days’ imprisonment. Seven months of the sentence are to be served in jail, with the remainder converted to fines of MVR 130,800 and MVR 50,000 ordered as compensation to a foreign national.
On a third charge of unauthorised possession of another person’s property, Ibrahim was sentenced to one year and 12 days’ imprisonment. Two months of the sentence are to be served in jail, with the remainder converted to a fine of MVR 62,400 and compensation of USD 3,500 to the foreign national.
Court proceedings relating to Hassan Sehenshah and Shamman Waheed are ongoing, and sentencing has not yet been concluded in their cases.
