Ex-Immigration chief Shamman remanded for 15 days amid probe

Former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamman Waheed has been remanded in custody for 15 days.

Police are investigating a case involving immigration officers, including Shamman, who are alleged to have used their positional influence to extort illegal benefits from foreigners.

Shamman was removed from his position and arrested on Friday along with three other immigration officers.

Police stated that Shamman was presented before the Criminal Court on Saturday, which ruled on his remand.

According to the police, the investigation has identified individuals from various sections of the immigration department as being involved in the case.

The allegations include:

  • Using their authority to search a residence occupied by foreigners and detaining several individuals.

  • Taking the foreigners into immigration custody along with MVR 530,000.

  • Releasing one foreigner the following night on Shamman’s orders in exchange for cash.

  • Meeting the released foreigner on the street and taking the money to Shamman’s residence.

Police have seized a significant amount of cash and electronic devices from Shamman’s residence as part of the investigation.
