MWSC begins testing Male-Hulhumale water systems
The pipeline along the Sinamale Bridge is designed to ensure water supply security in Male and Hulhumale.
The Managing Director of Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Abdul Matheen Mohamed, has announced that work has commenced to connect the water systems of Male and Hulhumale.
Speaking on state media’s 'Raajje Miadhu' programme on Saturday, Matheen stated that a pipeline installed along the Sinamale Bridge will have the capacity to transport 20,000 tonnes of water per day.
In his presidential address at the opening of parliament this year, President Mohamed Muizzu stated that the connection of water systems between Male and Hulhumale would be completed within the year. Additionally, he announced that water production in Male would increase by 25% in 2024.
Matheen confirmed that the pipeline has been cleaned and connected at both ends.
"Currently, we have the capacity to transport 3,000 tonnes of water from Male to Hulhumale per day. If maintenance work is required in Hulhumale or an issue arises, we can transport water from Male" he said.
Pump stations need to be installed in both Male and Hulhumale before the full system can be utilised. According to Matheen, construction of these pump stations will be completed next month, with electricity and other necessary infrastructure expected to be operational by July or August.
MWSC has also commenced work with Hitachi to increase water production capacity in Male by an additional 10,000 tonnes.
The pipeline along the Sinamale Bridge is designed to ensure water supply security in Male and Hulhumale. The system will allow the transfer of water between the two locations in case of a supply disruption.
