A new 1,800 kW engine has been imported to help resolve the ongoing power crisis in Addu, Fenaka Corporation announced Tuesday.
For several months, the Addu Central Power Station has been struggling to provide a stable electricity supply to the islands connected to it. Frequent generator breakdowns and the inability to handle the increasing demand have resulted in repeated power outages, causing significant inconvenience to residents and businesses.
To tackle this issue, Fenaka has transported a generator from outside the country. In a statement posted on X, the company confirmed that the engine has been loaded onto a vessel and is currently en route from Malé to Addu. The vessel is expected to arrive in Addu on March 26, 2025, at 21:30 PM.
Despite various efforts to stabilise the electricity supply, the issue remains unresolved, even as the holy month of Ramadan nears its end. The situation has sparked criticism from opposition figures, with PNC MP Ahmed Azaan calling for the resignation of Fenaka officials if they fail to resolve the crisis promptly.
