Each to get MVR 4,500 as alms, ministry says
According to the minister, MVR 12.4 million has been collected as Zakat so far.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced that this year’s Fitr Zakat will be distributed equally among all registered poor individuals, with each receiving MVR 4,500.
Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stated that this is the first time such a change has been implemented in the Maldives.
Previously, Zakat funds were distributed within each island, resulting in variations in the amount received. In islands with fewer poor individuals, recipients received higher amounts, ranging from MVR 8,000 to MVR 12,000.
The ministry has now decided to allocate the funds equally to all registered poor individuals across the country. Shaheem stated that the objective of this change is to uphold social justice, which is a fundamental principle of Zakat.
“The difference now is that the whole country is treated as one and divided accordingly,” he said.
According to the minister, MVR 12.4 million has been collected as Zakat so far. These funds will be distributed equally among those on the official register, with each individual receiving MVR 4,500.
Last year, individuals in urban areas received MVR 8,000 per person as Fitr Zakat.
