An online petition has been launched calling for a reduction in the salaries and allowances of Members of Parliament (MPs) in an effort to address economic challenges.

The petition seeks to lower MPs' salaries and benefits, including committee allowances. It also calls for the removal of premium health insurance provided to MPs, advocating for equal healthcare access with the general public. Additionally, it calls for the discontinuation of allowances given to former MPs.

The petition states that MPs’ income does not reflect their workload and is significantly higher than the average income of other citizens. It argues that this disparity is unfair, particularly during economic difficulties.

Currently, an MP receives MVR 85,000 per month as salary and allowances.

During a parliamentary debate last July, several MPs expressed the view that their current salaries and allowances were insufficient.
