Govt to review curriculum, introduce new assessment measures
Approximately 90,000 students are enrolled in schools across the Maldives for the current academic year.
Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu has announced that the national curriculum will undergo a review this year, alongside efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning across schools in the Maldives.
Speaking in his address on Monday to mark the beginning of the new academic year, the minister outlined several initiatives planned by the Ministry of Education.
Shafeeu stated that curriculum revisions will be carried out during the year. As part of this process, digital versions of textbooks and workbooks for Key Stage 4 subjects will be developed. The digital content will be prepared by individuals with expertise in education.
The minister also confirmed that the National Assessment for Learning Outcomes (NALO) will be administered to students completing Key Stage 3 for the first time this year. Until now, NALO assessments have only been conducted for students who completed Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
He further noted that practical steps will be taken to benchmark the learning levels of Maldivian primary school students at an international level.
Shafeeu also highlighted the planned rollout of a new education management system later in the year. The system incorporates elements of artificial intelligence and other technologies. The minister encouraged schools to familiarise students with technological developments and to ensure that all students are included in the teaching process.
According to the ministry, approximately 90,000 students are enrolled in schools across the Maldives for the current academic year. These students will be taught by around 11,000 teachers.
