A virtual autopsy has been conducted on the body of Zakiyya Moosa, who was found dead with injuries at her residence in N. Holhudhoo in September 2024.

The procedure was carried out in India by a police team using CT scans and MRI imaging to generate a three-dimensional model of the body. This method was used instead of a physical autopsy.

The absence of a traditional autopsy had previously led to protests by residents of Holhudhoo, who raised concerns about the handling of the investigation.

Although a full autopsy was not performed, the body was examined by a pathologist in Malé. According to police, the pathologist’s assessment included the following observations:

  • Multiple wounds were found on both sides of Zakiyya's neck: three deep wounds on the left side and two on the right.

  • A mark was observed on the chest, but it was not categorised as an injury.

  • Hesitation marks or superficial stab wounds were present.

  • No evidence was found to indicate the presence of another person at the scene.

  • The pathologist advised there was no sign of injury inflicted by another individual.

Chief Superintendent of Police Hassan Shifau, speaking at a press conference, said there was no requirement to conduct a full autopsy due to the findings of the pathologist.

"A pathologist examines the body to determine the cause and manner of death. An autopsy is only one method to establish that," he said.

Public scrutiny of the police investigation has led to the involvement of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The FBI is expected to assist with reviewing the investigation, with the aim of addressing public concerns and involving an independent body in the process.

The case has resulted in unrest in Holhudhoo. Zakiyya’s eldest son, Moosa Rimzi, was taken into custody during the investigation and later released. Other family members have also been subject to allegations.
