Maldive Gas has initiated legal proceedings to recover an advance payment made to a foreign supplier for a gas shipment that was not delivered.
The matter was raised by Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Dhangethi MP Ahmed Nazim during a sitting of the Parliament’s Finance Committee held Wednesday. According to Nazim, the payment was made in October last year, but the gas was not received, and the funds have not been recovered.
A Maldive Gas official told Atoll Times that the company had followed its standard procurement procedures in arranging the shipment. A request for proposal was issued, and the supplier offering the lowest price and meeting delivery conditions was selected.
As part of the agreement, 30% of the total shipment value was paid in advance. However, the supplier failed to deliver the shipment within the agreed timeframe, prompting the company to request a refund.
Despite multiple attempts to resolve the matter, the supplier has not returned the funds. Maldive Gas stated that its legal team is now pursuing recovery through legal channels.
Although the exact amount of the missing funds has not been officially revealed, reliable sources have confirmed that Maldive Gas paid $240,000 (approximately MVR 3.7 million) to the foreign company.
