Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has denied any involvement in an incident in which a 21-year-old woman was found injured on the roof of a building in Henveiru, Malé.
The woman was discovered on the roof of a house in Henveiru early Friday morning. Her condition deteriorated, and she was placed on a ventilator by Saturday. She was taken off the ventilator on Sunday night.
Speculation has circulated on social media suggesting the woman may have been pushed from a height. However, the Maldives Police Service stated that the woman did not fall from the ninth floor as a result of being pushed.
Following allegations made against Minister Ameen on social media, further attention was drawn after police held a closed-door press briefing to provide information about the investigation. Police stated that the woman and others present with her on the night of the incident had been at a house in central Malé, but it was not the house from which the woman later fell.
Media reports that followed named the location of the house as a property owned by Minister Ameen and his family. This led to protests on Sunday evening calling for his resignation.
In a post published on social media platform ‘X’ on Sunday night, Ameen denied the allegations. He expressed concern for the woman’s condition and wished her a full recovery.
Ameen acknowledged that a gathering had taken place in the building on the night of the incident but stated that the event had not occurred in his personal apartment. He explained that the building has multiple owners, including his three brothers.
“The activity was not conducted in my apartment. I have no information about the activity and I have no control over what happens outside the apartment,” Ameen said.
He also disclosed that two individuals, whom he referred to as elder brothers, were present at the gathering and had been taken in for questioning by police.
Ameen added that he was informed about the matter on Friday evening and had not contacted any investigative or enforcement agencies or government officials regarding the incident. He stated that he had neither sought information nor attempted to influence the ongoing investigation.
