The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public advisory for individuals planning to travel abroad during the Eid al-Adha holidays, urging caution due to the spread of chikungunya in some neighbouring countries.
In a post published on the social media platform X, the HPA stated: “Chikungunya is spreading in some neighbouring countries. Please be careful when travelling abroad this holiday season to protect yourself from mosquito bites.”
The agency also outlined preventive measures for individuals travelling to affected areas:
To prevent mosquito bites:
-
Apply mosquito repellent or use spray.
-
Wear clothing that covers the body as much as possible.
-
Use mosquito nets or window screens indoors.
-
Keep doors and windows closed, particularly during mosquito breeding seasons.
The HPA reminded the public that mosquito activity is typically highest during the morning and evening, although Aedes mosquitoes — which spread chikungunya — often bite during the day. Avoiding mosquito bites at all times was advised.
To destroy mosquito breeding sites and materials:
-
Clean containers and areas holding water inside homes and yards at least once a week.
-
Cover or dispose of items such as tree hollows, unused tanks, bottles, and cans to prevent water collection.
-
Prevent accumulation of water in public areas, roads, and construction sites by disposing of unused waterproof materials.
-
In larger water bodies with stagnant water, introduce fish species that feed on mosquito larvae.
The HPA has urged the public to remain informed and take precautionary measures both at home and when travelling to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.
