President urges youth not to let politicians exploit emotions
President Muizzu reiterated that unrest would not serve the interests of Maldivian citizens and that maintaining peace was a shared responsibility.
President Mohamed Muizzu Sunday urged youths not to allow politicians to misuse the emotions being expressed over the case of the youth who was found fallen on the roof of a house earlier this month.
The President made the remarks in an interview with state media outlet PSM before departing for Malaysia.
President Muizzu stated that the government would not discriminate against any citizen and would act along the path of justice. He said that in the ongoing investigation, the government’s intention was to establish the truth and deliver justice to all those involved.
Responding to allegations that the government was attempting to obscure the issue, the President said he accepted the complaints raised by protest participants. However, he alleged that politicians were exploiting public emotions to create unrest. He urged the public not to allow such misuse, stating that it was not the path to national stability.
"I would like to tell young people that your concerns and emotions are real. Do not let anyone mislead you. Now you can see that politicians are trying to use these emotions to create unrest in the country," he said.
The President further stated:
-
Issues must be viewed responsibly and from multiple perspectives
-
Investigations would be conducted without discrimination
-
Decisions would be made independently and free from external influence
-
The President remains accountable to the people
-
Actions would be taken to maintain peace and protect national interests
-
Citizens were encouraged to raise concerns directly with him
President Muizzu reiterated that unrest would not serve the interests of Maldivian citizens and that maintaining peace was a shared responsibility.
Large groups of youths have been staging protests in Malé to demand justice for Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who was found fallen from the ninth floor of H. Fentenoige onto the roof of H. Mitaz House on the morning of 18 April.
The protests intensified, leading to the resignation of Ali Shujau as Commissioner of Police yesterday.
